In the 2024 Budget, the Finance Minister announced that over 1.28 crore registrations have been completed under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The government is committed to taking all necessary measures to reach the goal of installing rooftop solar panels in 1 crore homes as soon as possible.
In the Interim Budget 2024-25, the Finance Minister introduced a rooftop solar scheme, which was officially launched by the Prime Minister on February 15, 2024, as the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.’ The 2024-25 Budget highlights the government’s commitment to installing solar panels in 1 crore households, offering subsidies for residential installations that will help reduce electricity bills.
This scheme allows households to generate power and earn money from excess electricity supplied back to the grid. The Central Government will provide substantial subsidies directly to citizens' bank accounts and offer low-interest loans to minimize financial burdens. Subsidies will cover up to 40% of installation costs.
By implementing this initiative, poor and middle-class families are expected to save between Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 18,000 crores annually through free solar energy and selling surplus power to distribution companies. Additionally, the government anticipates saving around Rs. 75,000 crores annually in electricity costs through this program.
The Rooftop Solar Yojana, also known as the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, is designed to provide 300 units of free electricity each month to one crore households. The main goal of this initiative is to lower household electricity costs through the installation of rooftop solar panels and the utilization of solar energy. By promoting the installation of rooftop solar panels, the scheme seeks to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources and advance sustainable energy practices, emphasizing a transition to clean and renewable energy.

Under the Rooftop Solar Scheme, the government will provide the below subsidies for installing solar panels:
For up to 2 kW - Rs. 30,000 per kW.
For additional capacity up to 3 kW - Rs. 18,000 per kW.
Total subsidy for solar systems larger than 3 kW - Maximum Rs. 78,000.
The subsidy for Group Housing Society (GHS)/ Resident Welfare Association (RWA) is Rs. 18,000 per kW for common facilities, including EV charging up to 500kW capacity at Rs.3 per kW per house. The upper limit includes individual rooftop plants installed by individual residents in the GHS or RWA.
Steps to apply for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana:
Step 1: Visit the official website of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Apply for Rooftop Solar’ button available on the left-hand side of the homepage.
Step 3: Click on ‘Registration’ and select the state, district, and electricity distribution company, enter your customer account number, and click on ‘Next’.
Step 4: Enter your mobile number and email, and click on ‘Proceed’.
Step 5: Enter the required details on the ‘Apply for Rooftop Solar Installation’ form, upload the required documents and click on the ‘Final Submission’ button to submit.
Step 6: After applying for Rooftop Solar, wait for the feasibility approval from DISCOM. Once the feasibility approval gets approved, install the plant through a registered vendor in your DISCOM. You can find the registered vendor near your house by entering your state on the search bar of the page.
Step 7: Submit the plant details and apply for a net meter after the installation is over.
Step 8: After the successful installation of the net meter and DISCOM inspection, they will generate a commissioning certificate from the National portal for rooftop solar.
Step 9: Once you get the commissioning report, submit your bank account details and a cancelled cheque by logging into the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana portal. You will receive the subsidy in your bank account within 30 days.

Consumer must not have availed subsidy for solar under any other scheme from government, be it central or state government.
Consumer must have a valid electricity connection to avail the subsidy. Feasibilty to install solar power plant may be given based on the connected load mentioned in the bill and the transformer capacity.
